Mayor of Barcelona announces Mercabarna’s future projects
Over the next five years, Mercabarna will be “redesigned” to consolidate its position as the leading Mediterranean food cluster and one of the top fresh-produce suppliers to all of Europe. The plan was announced by Barcelona mayor Jordi Hereu on 14 October, during his visit and subsequent press conference at Mercabarna.

Mercabarna participates in the St Michael’s Fair
The city of Lleida hosted the 54th annual St Michael’s Fair and the 23rd annual Eurofruit show from 25 to 29 September, and Mercabarna was there.
Collaboration with World Mental Health Day
Mercabarna lent a hand at the event scheduled to celebrate World Mental Health Day, held in Barcelona on 11 October. Mercabarna has collaborated with fresh fruit.
Consumers associations visit Mercabarna
On 18 September, Mercabarna hosted the visit of several Spain-wide consumer associations, including the National Civic Union Federation of Consumers and Housewives of Spain (UNAE), the Federation of Independent Users and Consumers (FUCI), the Consumers’ Union of Spain (UCE) and the General Consumers’ Association (ASGECO).
Refurbishment of the Retailers’ Guild headquarters
The Fruit and Vegetable Retailers’ Guild of Barcelona has remodelled its headquarters, located in the office area of the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market. Through this remodelling project it has improved the layout of offices, expanded its archive and updated furnishings and computer equipment.
Mercabarna chair praises Catalan fruit
On 6 August, Jordi William Carnes, Mercabarna’s chair and Barcelona’s deputy mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Promotion, held a press conference in Mercabarna where among other matters he announced that the fruit offer at the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market increases by up to 20% in the summer months.
New pedestrian accesses
Good news for pedestrians who want to enter or depart from Mercabarna via Zona Franca’s Calle F! Since July, two revolving doors have been in operation in Calle Longitudinal 11, providing direct access to Calle F.
José Martín, chair of the National Retailers’ Federation, dies
José Martín, chair of the National Fruit and Vegetable Retailers’ Federation, died on 27 August at the age of 62.
Mercabarna presents training courses to immigrant groups
On 15 September, Montserrat Gil de Bernabé, managing director of Mercabarna, Pablo Vilanova, Studies and Development manager, Toni Nieto, manager of the Customer Service Office (OAC), and the heads of the Training Centre, met with the representatives of the Pakistani Workers’ Association of Catalonia.
