The Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, previously located at the iconic premises in the Born in Barcelona, moved to Mercabarna on 9 August 1971, thereby becoming the first to become established in the Food Unit.
It is the market that takes up the most space (more than 230,000 square metres spread over seven buildings) and it is also the one that generates the largest amount of movement, both of people and produce.
At the present time there are almost 200 companies there and it has 440 points of sale.
The market moves more than a million tonnes of produce per year from all over the world and this is distributed within and beyond the borders of Catalonia.
In 1989 the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market adopted day-time business hours in contrast to most of the world’s wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, which have early morning business hours.
