Food Bank
Since 2002, the Mercabarna management has lent this organization a store within the Food Unit, which is used as a collection and distribution centre for fruit and vegetables that are not saleable in the Market, but which are fit for consumption.
Already more than 40 companies in Mercabarna collaborate with the Bank, contributing some of their surplus of fresh produce. Between them all, some 30 tonnes are collected each month.
Subsequently, the Bank distributes the food amongst charitable bodies that help the most needy. In a single day, some 20,000 people benefit from fresh produce offered by Mercabarna companies.
