The Central Fish Market was opened on the morning of 3 to 4 October 1983. It had previously been located in Carrer Wellington in Barcelona.
The Central Fish Market premises cover some 30,000 square metres. More than 50 wholesale companies are established there with 80 points of sale. The market has processing halls for gutting and filleting, and temperature-controlled areas suitable for trading in frozen produce. There are 14 distribution points (pick-up points).
The Market moves around 100,000 tonnes of produce per year, 85% of which is fresh. At the present time almost 50% of produce is of Spanish origin, the rest being imported from the European Union or other countries.
The Market has grown constantly over the years and has incorporated improvements in its infrastructure to meet new health and hygiene regulations. These improvements have made the Mercabarna Central Fish Market the leader amongst European wholesale markets with regard to fulfilment of the most recent technical, commercial, health and environment regulations.
